Most people come to this part of the world for scuba. After all, if there is one Micronesian state that offers the best dive sites in region, it would undoubtedly be Chuuk. The vast Truk Lagoon is a true wreck mecca, featuring astounding ships submerged from WWII. It offers the best of both worlds, maritime history and vast undersea, where corals (hard and soft) paint the water with a kaleidoscopic of colors. Go further inland and you will see imposing Japanese lighthouses overlooking some of the finest views of Micronesia. The beautiful harbor is not only perfect for sightseeing, but for watching the rare migratory birdlife in the region.
The most notable site in Micronesia, Truk Lagoon is also one of the most interesting dive sites in the world. It boasts over 60 submerged ships and aircrafts that form part of the earth’s largest-ever underwater museum.
The largest of all the islands in the federation, Pohnpei also has the tallest peaks. It draws many outdoor enthusiasts who want to access excellent venues for hiking and trekking. You can go fishing and diving around the mangrove-rich coastline, as well as island hop on the nearby atolls (such as Pakin and Ant) for more unspoiled nature. Spectacular waterfalls can be found here, including the famous Liduduhniap Twin Falls. The island features a wide range of nature parks for trailing, along with sheer cliff drops and numerous historical sites like the Spanish Wall, the German Bell Tower, Sokehs Mass Grave, and different Japanese shrines and war tanks.
Dubbed as the "Venice of the Pacific," this ancient city features a large collection of age-old ruins and archaeological sites that date back as early as 500 AD. The area is accessible via a 45-minute boat trip from the main town of Kolonia.
If seclusion and privacy are what you are looking for, Kosrae is the best place in Micronesia. This beach and reef fringed island is filled with all kinds of attractions, from archeological ruins of the Neolithic age to primeval mangrove forest canals. Its virgin reef is known for its diverse marine life while its natural harbors are home to WWII wrecks. Those looking for high-altitude adventures can also climb the island’s tallest mountain, Mt. Finkol, which stands 2,064 ft above sea level. Kosrae is also home to FSM’s Giant Clam Farm, the stunning Supyen and Saolong waterfalls, Menke Ruins, and the fascinating Wiya Bird Cave, where thousands of species reside.
This historical site (along with similar ruins like Nan Madol in Pohnpei) date back to the 13th century. Tourists come here to see huge basaltic walls and ruins of the tombs, living quarters, and streets that made up the capital during ancient times.
Ancient artifacts, photos and remnants of culture and history are kept safe in this Micronesia museum in the vibrant area of Tofol. It is an excellent place to get a good look into the island past.
